This project followed the completion of a large loft extension, where the client required fully bespoke, made-to-measure wardrobes built under the eaves on both sides of the room. From the outset, it was clear that this would be a highly detailed and technically demanding installation, not only due to the shape of the space but also because of the client’s very specific storage requirements.
The brief called for a careful balance of functionality and aesthetics. We designed a combination of generous hanging space, practical drawers, and adjustable shelving to maximise every inch of the available area beneath the sloping ceilings. Each section was thoughtfully planned to ensure the wardrobes were not only visually cohesive but also highly usable for everyday storage.
A number of physical challenges added complexity to the design and installation process. The space included boxed-in pipework from a sun tunnel, as well as an extractor vent that needed to be seamlessly integrated into the final build. Every element had to be measured precisely and accounted for, ensuring that the finished wardrobes looked clean and intentional, rather than compromised by these unavoidable features.
Access to the loft was another significant consideration. The staircase leading up to the room was particularly tight and difficult, meaning all components had to be designed with restricted access in mind. Each piece was carefully sized, manufactured, and transported to ensure it could be safely manoeuvred into position without sacrificing the integrity of the design. This level of planning is essential in bespoke work, where off-the-shelf solutions simply wouldn’t be viable.
Unquestionably, this was one of the most challenging design and installation projects we have completed. The complexity of the space, combined with a very short timescale from initial design through to final installation, required efficient coordination and a high level of craftsmanship throughout.
The finished wardrobes feature Fir Green shaker-style doors, which bring a rich depth of colour to the room while maintaining a timeless, classic look. These are beautifully complemented by brass knobs, adding a subtle touch of warmth and contrast. Internally, the pewter oak shelving enhances the overall feel, offering both durability and a refined finish that ties the whole project together.
Despite the challenges, the final result is a seamless and highly functional storage solution that makes full use of the available space. The wardrobes sit perfectly within the eaves, appearing as though they have always been part of the room. Most importantly, the client was incredibly pleased with the end result, both in terms of practicality and the overall finish—making the effort and attention to detail throughout the project entirely worthwhile.
